2,394 - A Volt Odyssey

Well, we finally made it - after 4.5 days, 10 states and 2,394 miles, we arrived in Los Angeles this afternoon for the LA auto show this week.  Check out the pics below from the last leg of our journey - Las Vegas to Los Angeles.  We were only able to get full charges two of the four nights of our trip, with partial charges the other nights.  This is why the Volt's range extending engine is so important - when you can't recharge, all you need to do is refuel with gas and keep driving.  We pretty much flew by the seat of our pants on this one, stopping to sleep wherever we were when we got tired of driving.

From a performance standpoint, we always fell within a 25-50 mile battery range depending on our terrain, temperature and various driving techniques, and that's even after the nights we only got partial charges.  In extended range mode, our fuel economy ranged from about 36-43 mpg depending on the day and how we were driving, but keep in mind we were traveling highway speeds almost exclusively and sometimes up to 80mph (legal speed limit in Utah).  All in all a very successful road trip and lots of fun.  Now, where do we find a good car wash in LA? -Phil

I'm disappointed in the Volt after all the time and hype from GM, it's range is poor, fuel has to be PREMIUM! and cost to purchase is way out of line. Add cost for 240V charge station and you don't have a winner. Toyota has you beat again! Come on, we can do better, can't we? I'm a buy AMERICAN fan all the way, but this sucks!!!!!

Bob, I'm an automotive enthusiast, and I must disagree with your comments for a few reasons. A charge station is not necessary at all. Toyota has only been able to make an electric hybrid that goes 13 miles on electric only compared to the Volt's 25-50. The Volt is built for the infrastructure of today. The Volt wont leave you stuck if you run out of battery power.

Hi adam, I look at the cost to get the 25-50 miles and lets be realistic, lots of travel will require the gas backup generator. I know the toyota Prius will get you anywhere you want to go with 48-55 MPG at half the purchase cost and runs on regular gas with the heat or ac on. That's real why can't they state the real mileage on the volt. Fot that matter why can't all car makers tell the public real mileage and base if on real facts! Seal level, 70 degrees or what ever, who are they kidding. My problem is why does the car have to weigh so much, this was supposed to be cutting edge, designed from the ground up, I'm dissapointed and I Bleed GM!
